Advanced Search
Within 'Advanced Search', two types of search are available: Studies and Dublin Core (when available).
Studies
This option is selected by default and enables you to search survey datasets and tables (cubes). To use:- Click
above the browse list. A new window will then open. - In the 'Search criteria' box, select a field to search. Study Description is shown by default.
- Enter a search term in the text box.
- Use 'More' to add additional search terms, if required, and the appropriate operator to connect them.
Up to four search terms can be combined using 'and', 'or', or 'not'.
The 'Less' key can be used to remove the last. - Press either Return or the Search button to start the search.
- The results will then be displayed at the end of the browse list with details of the actual search terms, and operators, used.
Search where?
By default all available catalogues are searched. If more than one main catalogue is available these will be displayed with their
own check boxes in the 'Search where?' box.
By checking and unchecking the boxes next to each listed catalogue, it is possible
to limit your search to specific catalogues. If there is only one main catalogue, no check box will be available.
Searching for datasets, variables, or tables (cubes)
Nesstar systems that contain a mix of survey and tabular datasets will have a 'Return what?' section. If you are using a Nesstar
system that only contains tabular/cube datasets then you may find that the following options are not available.
In the 'Return what?' section, three options are available:
- Search for datasets
- Search for variables
- Search for tables
Advanced search can search for words in one or more fields. The following examples are fields that are available from the drop down menu in the 'Search criteria' box: Study Description, Abstract, Bibliographic Citation, Keywords, and Geographic coverage.
Note: Not all datasets may contain information for each field.
Searching for variables
Choose the 'Searching for variables' option to search fields within the 'Variable Description' section, e.g. Variable
name, Question text. A list of studies containing variables that match your search criteria will then be displayed in
the browse list. When the study is opened, the relevant variables will be displayed with an Open in context
option. Select this to open the study in which the variable was found. A new window will then open, with the selected
variable highlighted.
Searching for tables
Choose the 'Searching for tables' option to search tabular (cube) datasets. All the metadata fields can be searched as
for survey data.
To search within a dataset:
- Find the 'Identification Number' of the dataset in the Metadata (within Study Description).
- Using Advanced Search, select 'Identifier', and then enter the Identification Number.
- Use More to include the search criteria you then wish to use for this dataset.
- Press either Return or the Search button to start the search.
Dublin Core
This option enables you to search those resources that have been published using the Dublin Core/e-Government Metadata Standard (e-GMS) fields. These are typically resources such as Microsoft Word documents, Adobe Acrobat PDF files, or could alternatively be links to other websites.Note: It is not possible to carry out an additional search on search results.
