A new briefing analysing the latest data on migration into and from the county is now available .

This analysis looks at a variety of different data sources, to give a broad picture of migration into and out of the county.

Key points from the briefing:

  • In 2024, internal migration continued to be the main driver of population growth in East Sussex, with international migration representing a smaller proportion of population change.
  • The number of net arrivals from within the UK (internal migration) was just below the average for the last 10 years (4,312), at 3,988 in 2024.
  • International net arrivals were lower than last year, with 2,851 net arrivals in 2024, compared to 4,107 net international arrivals in 2023.
  • With more deaths than births occurring in the county every year for over 50 years, negative natural change remains very large, with 2,552 fewer births than deaths in 2024. The continuing natural decline of the population is offset by gains from new residents moving in, both from abroad and within the UK.
  • There was a sharp fall in new National Insurance numbers (NINos) issued to non-UK nationals in the year to March 2026. 1,050 were issued in East Sussex, 27% lower than 1,439 issued in the year to March 2025, and 71% lower than in 2022/23 (3,587).
