We have published a new briefing analysing ESCC’s latest set of 2024-based, dwelling-led demographic projections from spring 2026.
These projections use the most up-to-date data on population, births, deaths and migration from the ONS. They also use the latest plans for future housing from the districts and boroughs, supplied in spring 2026 (dwelling-led).
You can access the briefing here: Population projections briefing June 2026
Key points from the latest briefing:
- The East Sussex population is projected to grow by nearly 48,000 in the next 15 years, from 560,900 in 2024 to 609,300 in 2039.
- There is projected to be a large increase in the number of people aged 65 and over, but declines among some younger age groups.
- The very oldest group aged 85+ are projected to increase by 76%.
- Wealden is projected to see the most growth, but Rother and Lewes are also projected to see significant increases. Eastbourne and Hastings are both projected to see a slight decline in population over the 15 years from 2024-2039.
- The number of households is projected to grow faster than the population, as household size continues to decline.
